Camping Log 110317

The wife wanted to go to Asheville for her birthday weekend. After looking online and calling several places, I finally found a campground with spots open.  Taps RV Park.  It is right off 40 and close to town.  The sites were small and had no fire rings.  As you could see the camper and the truck didn’t fit on the site.

Our campsite

On Saturday we went to the DuPont Forrest and hiked to triple falls and high falls.

We found a great hot chicken restaurant.  Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack.  Man it was good.

Backup Lights

Issue, I can’t see behind the camper when backing at night.  So I have been researching how to put backup lights on the camper.   Here is my solution.

After Lots of research I found this light bar on amazon that came with a wireless control for $38.  This means I can control the backup lights from the truck and not have to try to trace down the backup light wire from the 7 pin that is hidden somewhere in the camper.

Next issue was how to mount it.  I didn’t want to drill any holes in the camper yet so my buddy and I came up with plan to mount it.  We welded 1″ square tubing to the factory spare tire mount and then welded a piece of flat bar to it.  I then painted it with a can of spray bed-liner.  We left the extra height on top because I would like to get a rear view camera and that gives me a nice place to mount it.

Mounting it above the tire lets me aim the light down so I hopefully don’t upset too many campers when using the light.

Now I have plenty of light behind the camper to backup.

Finished Product.

So we had to be back in Greensboro so we found ourselves back at Hagan Stone.  This time the campground was full.  The family at the site next us had parked their camper crooked and I think if I had put my awning out it would have gone over their camper.

We had to be somewhere in Greensboro on Saturday, but the weather finally cooled off so we wanted to camp too.  We went to hagan stone which is a county park just out side of Greensboro.  Man the sites are tight.  When I put my awning out it was just inches from the camper next to us.

We finally got our camper back.  We had some warranty issues fixed and were ready to put it to use.  We went to Sycamore Lodge where we have a membership and actually got a lake site.  I didn’t take any pictures of the site but just know that the lake sites are some of the best ones there.

Labor day weekend at the Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Since our fifth wheel is in the shop waiting on some parts to come in that got damaged and had to be reordered we thought we would try something different.  We made a ferry reservation and packed up the truck with the trusty tent and off to the beach we go.

We got to Cape lookout and started riding down the beach to find a spot to make camp.  We drove about 4 miles from the cabin and found a nice spot that was empty for as far as we could see.

We finally setup camp.  Even though it is cloudy put on sun screen first. Being on an island with no way to hide from sun really stinks when you get sun burned.

I even caught my first fish while surf fishing.  A bluefish.  After taking a picture off he went.

Sunrise and sun set were awesome, even if the sun rise did wake me up but being able to take the picture of the sun rise while laying in bed is pretty cool.

We did try to make it to the lighthouse.  However the beach was closed and someone in with a truck camper was stuck up to the fender in a mud hole on the back road and I didn’t want to risk getting stuck.  The week before we went  a really strong storm hit the island and part of it was under water. Picture was taken from much farther away than it looks because of a zoom lens.

Parkers Creek

ordan Lake, NC

We went for the weekend and man it was hot.  We walked into the lake and I was thinking I don’t have my bath this warm.  I googled it a little later and found the water temp was 88.

We stayed in Parker’s Creek Loop 2 Site 88.  I didn’t take a picture of the site but it was the normal state park site.  I did take a picture of the lake out of the back window.

York County Ebenezer Park
Rock Hill, SC
2 nights

We went here to go to the North Carolina ASA Federation State Tournament.   We had a pull through site but it was interesting.  As you can see in the picture below, the picnic table and fire ring are on the back side of the camper.  If we wanted to put the awning out it would have been in the road.  The truck is park behind the camper.

Before the tournament I was second for shooter of the year in the hunter class.  I shot both the unkown and the know ranges in one day.  I shot ok on the unknown side and was actually up on the 1st place shooter of the year archer.  The kown side I was doing ok until the next to last target.  I shot a 5.  I have no idea what I did wrong.  The arrow was on line just dropped way low like an inch below the 8 line.  It still irks me.  If I would have gotten at least a 10 on that shot I would have been tied with shooter of year winner.

Camp Hatteras
Waves, NC
7 Nights

We spent a week here and had to keep reminding ourselves that it was June because of how empty the campground was and how cold it was.   Two days we were there a gale force wind was issued.  50 mph wind gusts will rock a camper pretty good.  Towards the end of the week when it warmed up and schools were letting out it started to fill in.

At least the kite boarders enjoyed it.

Other the wind we had a good trip, the temps stayed in the 70s.  On the stormy days we went and toured a couple of light houses that we hadn’t been to before.

Mayberry Campground
Mount Airy, NC
2 Nights

We went to Mount Airy to shoot the R100 This is an 3D archer shoot that has the coolest targets.  What do you expect when it is put on by a target company.

We stayed at Mayberry Campground.  The campground was very nice it is wide open and no shade anywhere.  We had a great view of the mountains in the distance from our site.
